Moisture trapped in attics leads to hidden water damage, structural issues, and mold growth. Moisture also ruins insulation R-value, increasing heating costs. Identifying and treating the source of attic moisture problems preserves comfort and home value.

Moisture in the Insulation contractor is usually caused by air infiltration through the attic venting system, a lack of proper ventilation and insulation, or a combination of both.

Improve Attic Insulation Performance

In most climates, the attic should have adequate ventilation to control temperature and moisture content. Having soffit vents with good openings, and a well-performing ridge vent is essential for a healthy attic. Many homes have soffit vents blocked by insulation, and ridge vents that don’t work as well as they should. This creates conditions for moisture to build up inside the attic, which can lead to stains on the rafters and musty odors in the house.

Condensation forms when warm attic air rises and contacts cold roof deck surfaces. During high humidity periods, or in areas with long humid seasons and wide seasonal temperature swings, this moisture can wreak havoc on wood framing, OSB, drywall, and insulation. Prolonged exposure compromises building materials and promotes rot, mold growth, and corroded metal fasteners. Moisture also wicks down into walls and ceilings, damaging finishes and lowering indoor air quality.
